Gloves or No Gloves? How They Impact Your Photography Experience
Share
When the mercury plunges, photographers face a critical choice: gloves on or bare hands? Gloves offer warmth, protection, and grip, but they can sometimes hinder camera control and touchscreen use. On the flip side, bare hands provide superior dexterity and responsiveness but come at the cost of frozen fingers and potential loss of control in harsh conditions.
Let’s dive into the pros and cons of photography gloves versus bare hands to help you make the best call for your next outdoor shoot, whether you're capturing landscapes, street scenes, or wildlife.
Shooting with Gloves: Pros & Cons
✅ Advantages of Wearing Gloves for Photography
Warmth & Comfort in Cold Weather
When you're shooting winter landscapes, high-altitude scenes, or battling chilly winds, gloves can keep your fingers nimble and prevent numbness—vital for long exposure shots, astrophotography, and golden hour captures.
Superior Grip & Gear Protection
High-quality photography gloves, like the OTEX XT-801, come with an enhanced non-slip palm design, ensuring a solid grip on your DSLR, mirrorless camera, or smartphone gimbal, even in wet or icy conditions.
Touchscreen Compatibility
Controlling your camera, smartphone, or drone without removing your gloves can be essential in some situations, so gloves with touchscreen-sensitive fingertips can be the ideal feature for quick, on the fly adjustments without exposing your hands to the elements.
Weatherproof Shield
Cold, wind, and moisture are no match for gloves with advanced waterproofing and wind-resistant materials. The OTEX XT-801 gloves provide robust protection, keeping your hands dry and comfortable in extreme environments.
Flip-Lock Thumb & Fingers for Instant Access
The ability to quickly access camera dials and buttons is vital for manual shooters. Photographers should look for gloves with ends that open to allow thumbs & fingers to make precise adjustments without removing their gloves. The OTEX XT-801 gloves deliver the innovative Flip-Lock technology feature, making them an obvious first choice for photographers.
❌ Disadvantages of Wearing Gloves
Reduced Tactile Sensation
Even the thinnest photography gloves can limit the precision needed for manual focusing, adjusting small dials, or swapping lenses swiftly.
Touchscreen Challenges
While touchscreen-compatible gloves like the OTEX XT-801 perform well, extreme cold can still affect accuracy on some devices.
Bulk & Restricted Movement
Some gloves are too bulky for handling small buttons or quick gear changes. Bulky gloves also feel cumbersome and could possibly hinder your photography. The lightweight design of the OTEX XT-801 gloves reduces this problem, offering better dexterity.
Shooting Without Gloves: Pros & Cons
✅ Advantages of Shooting Bare-Handed
Maximum Dexterity & Precision
Nothing beats the natural feel of adjusting focus rings and pressing the shutter button with your bare hands. For manual focus enthusiasts, this approach provides the obvious choice for unparalleled control.
Seamless Touchscreen Control
Swipe, tap, and pinch-to-zoom on your camera’s LCD screen or mobile photography apps without any hiccups.
Faster Gear Handling
Quickly swap lenses, insert memory cards, or adjust your camera strap with ease—essential for fast-paced photography.
❌ Disadvantages of Shooting Without Gloves
Frozen Fingers & Numb Hands
In freezing temps, high-altitude shoots, or gusty conditions, your fingers can go numb, making it tough to handle your camera.
Increased Risk of Hand Fatigue
Cold air, wind chill, and moisture can lead to stiff joints, muscle fatigue, and even frostbite in extreme cases.
Sweaty or Slippery Grip
In humid or wet conditions, bare hands can get sweaty or slippery, increasing the risk of dropping your precious gear.

I ordered a pair of these and the Royal Mail lost them in Manchester! Second pair sent very quickly and arrived – love these gloves for camera work and daily work. The magnets hold the finger covers very well and they do keep you warm – in disastrous conditions no photo gloves would work but I would not be taking photo’s myself. All in all these are worth the proce and feel like they will last well.
